Opal and diamond pendant
Hi, everyone! The humongous project at work is winding down, so I'm briefly coming up for air. A couple of years ago I bought a black opal at a gem show, and I finally got around to doing something with it. :-) I was in such a fog from working so much overtime that I honestly don't remember much of what the jeweler said about the diamonds, except that the blue-green ones are irradiated. It's exactly one inch from top to bottom and a bit under half an inch from side to side, and surprisingly heavy for its size. I'm not usually very fond of opals, but this one had such deep colours it just enchanted me. (Yeah, right - like THAT'S hard to do!) ----------------- Trilby23 |

Re: Opal and diamond pendant
Wow Trillby23! I really don't know much about colored stones (I'm waiting for some books to come so I can read up!). I figured since hubby won't be buying me any new jewelry soon especially after my princess, I'll start to look into gemstones! The center stone reminded me of a mood ring! Looks like it's (and yours) is in a good mood hehe I'm curious, what made you put this stone in it's current setting (which I find amazing by the way!)

OoOoOhhhh Trilby that is amazing!!! Being an Aussie I do have a bit of a fondness for opals , I have a few from my late grandmother's collection... she was an opal nut!! I've seen heaps of them but never one quite like yours, it's totally unique!

Re: Opal and diamond pendant
Snooper and Widgie: Thanks for the kind words, y'all! ![]() Snooper, the design was a collaboration, and it was SUCH fun!! Since opals are fragile, I decided on a pendant instead of a ring, and a bezel setting. I didn't have a specific design in mind, but I knew the kind of look I wanted -- something that would draw attention to the opal without overpowering it; a few small diamonds and coloured stones to accent the blues and greens in the opal; something with clean lines, not too dressy or too flashy. Well, knowing how much I like unusual pieces, Jeweler #1 suggested a sunburst design. Then Jeweler #2 modified it to a starburst instead, with "rays" of different lengths, and alternating white diamonds with coloured gemstones. And then when they couldn't find gemstones that were the right shade, the business manager suggested using blue diamonds. And a few weeks later, I have a pendant!! :-) ------------- Trilby (Who has to do SOMETHING fun after working all that overtime for so long!!!) |

Re: Opal and diamond pendant
Thank you, Andi! It certainly is different, and that'a what caught my eye. I'd forgotten for a while, but now that you mention it, I'm 99.99% positive that the dealer at the gem show last year said it was an Australian opal. Yet ANOTHER reason to take a trio "Down Under" to the land of the koalas and the 'roos and the Sydney Opera House!! ------------- Trilby (Likes her job but finds it interferes with things like long vacations....) |

By the way, Andi -- what are the chances of getting you to post a few pictures of your grandmom's opal jewelry? :-) I'd love to see them! -------------- Trilby (Enablers R Us) |

WoW just brilliant and unique! I love opals too but they are just too brittle for a ring! Very neat pendant...definately a conversation piece!!~Ronda |

Re: Opal and diamond pendant
No worries Trilby, I took a couple of pics two of her prettiest opals, I couldn't find most of her jewellery, I do believe it was divvied up between the family when she died :P The opal in the ring is a fiery little beast, with flecks of red all through it, which were pretty hard to catch on camera (excuse the blurriness, photographer extraordinaire I ain't ). The side stones... CZs I think??? As you can see it was well loved judging by the rogue stone that hopped out :P And the pendant is such a divine shade of blue, I tried to capture it's 'sparkle' and fire, but it came up kind of dull, but it really is an electric stone.

Andi, I just love those, especially the blue one! I love custom jewelry and antique jewelry because of the pieces are so unique and individual, just like those. Thanks so much for posting! -------------- Trilby |
