OK, I know this question has been asked before and I have asked similar questions and I even found a previous discussion of platinum vs. white gold here: http://www.diamondring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3929 But I too have received conflicting info. Many people in that discussion say that their platinum lost its luster quickly. But at all the following websites it is stated clearly that platinum keeps its luster forever, while white gold loses its rhodium plating quickly (it's not the white gold I'm questioning though, I know that it wears): http://www.reisnichols.com/platinum.html http://www.flashmfg.com/platinum1.htm http://www.barinmalky.com/whatisplatinum.html http://www.ringsofplatinum.com/pfaq.htm In addition, I've had quite a few jewelers tell me platinum loses its luster faster and one tell me it wasn't true and that he wouldn't choose anything else besides platinum. AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!! Know what I mean? Any help? I really need to get the ring soon but I'm so confused. I know it comes down to a matter of preference but I just need more info. Also, are tension settings able to be polished? By anyone other than GAI? I'm not too familiar with the polishing process so I don't know if it is possible with a tension setting. What is the "luster" of platinum? Platinum must be burnished before polishing. I would aviod jewelers who don't understand platinum. what else might they not understand about thier chosen profession. If you mean the mirror finish then platinum will lose that mirror finish qucker than white gold. Platinum is more maleable than gold so the molecules of platinum just move around on the ring. As gold is worn, the wear is acutually removing molecules of gold from your ring. (it wears out quicker) Is the polish the most important factor to you? What about the durabilty and security offered by platinum. What about the vunerabilty of nickel alloy of white gold to chlorine in tap water and many other daily cleansers we use. This vunerablity allows the prongs to break off at or below the girdle of the gem it holds. Is the polish of the metal more important than the diamonds? |
